Geography

Howell County is located on the Southern Border. It is surrounded by Missouri counties of  Douglas, Ozark, Texas, Shannon, Oregon, and on the south border Fulton County Arkansas. The county spans 927.5 square miles. The county is home to several state conservation areas. Additionally, there are many areas in the county across the Mark Twain National Forest for recreational opportunities.

Conservation

The county is home to nine Missouri state conservation areas. Many of the state conservation areas in the county offer hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping opportunities to name a few. While horseback riding is a hobby to many in Howell County, we have not identified any state public land trails for horseback riding in the county. However, just a short drive away, in the neighboring counties of Shannon, Ozark and, Texas,  there are state conservation areas offering trails for horseback riding. Additionally, residents of Howell County are able to enjoy public land access to federal land in the Mark Twain National Forest.  Horseback riding trails are available in Howell County at the Ridge Runner Trail  and North Forth Section of Ozark Trail just to name a few.

According to the US Census, Howell County has a population of over 40,117, with a population density of 43.6 per square mile. The population percentage under the age of 18 is 23.9 percent. The population percentage age 65 and over is 20.1 percent.

Education

Due to the large geographic size and large youth population, Howell County has many school districts in the area. The county has many schools to meet the educational needs of children in the area. Furthermore, the county has several school districts to serve the region. The population percentage of youth under the age of 18 is 23.9. This population information is according to the 2019 census.

School Districts are Junction Hill c-12,  West Plains R-VII, Willow Springs R-IV, Fairview R-XI, Glenwood R-VIII, Howell Valley R-1, and Richards R-V.

Due to many of the smaller school districts only serving students in PK-8 grades,  upon graduation, parents then choose neighboring high schools after eighth-grade completion.  To clarify, for example, students attending the Junction Hill School District, select a high school in a neighboring school district after completion of 8th grade.  Then, Junction Hill School Districts pays tuition for the child to the high school district chosen. Highschools often considered for Junction Hill students are West Plains, Mountain View, and Willow Springs as the closest neighboring high schools.
